Ransoms are for the movies

I love movies where there is a ransom involved. You know how it goes. Somebody takes somebody and they ask somebody to give them large sums of money (generally in a brief case). The brief case also seems quite significant. God only knows why large stacks of money travel in brief cases, but somehow they go together in movies like arrests go with Cincinatti Bengals.

Being a money guy, it amazes me that so many of these people have access to such money so quickly. But I guess that's why they always kidnap the rich guy's family. I am also amazed that writers keep going back to the "no cops at the drop off" scenario. It's kinda played out. So why am I talking about ransoms on my blog? It's quite simple. Ransoms are for the movies.

Therefore, why have a gigantic amount of cash in your savings or checking account? This seems like it's a good problem to have. Too much money in your account.

Wow, Pete, you really are crazy.

No, I am not.
The reallity is that you worked very very hard to accumulate your ransom money. Now the problem is that your money isn't working hard. There is obviously something to be said about security and stability, but why do you keep ransom money? You aren't going to need $30k in a pinch, so why do you have it so readily available. Put it to work, that's why you worked so hard.

Disclaimer *Pete the Planner is well aware that you need some form of emergency fund, but I am speaking to those of you that have gigantic emergency funds. Pete the Planner (speaking in the 3rd person feels good sometimes) also is not speaking of any specific investment technique.
