The future is bright
As I get older, and my hair continues to play mean tricks on me, I am frequently thinking about the generation behind me. My generation makes pretty shaky decisions still, and hasn't earned the respect of our elders. The next generation is bombarded constantly with negative images and ideas through television and the internet. They too, need to earn the respect of their elders. This is a pretty scary thing. I can tell you with absolute confidence that I am now less scared of the generation behind me.
I have been reading over the applications that were submitted for the scholarship we created. To catch you up to speed, the scholarship is funded by all the proceeds of my book sales. It will be given to a student from Pike High School (the school I proudly attended). The recipient must be the first person in their family to go to college, and must demonstrate their can-do attitude. I am very excited by the applications that I have received. These kids have quite a bit of adversity ahead of them. They will be taking out student loans, holding jobs, and taking on a full course load. Many things have occurred to me in reading these applications. First and foremost, I am incredibly thankful for the financial support that my parents gave me in college. I have never been more appreciative of that. I also have realized how important it is for parents to set a great example for their children. These kids are being inspired by great parents, who are encouraging their children to do things that they have never personally done. I am very excited to write a nice big check for one of these great kids.
I created this scholarship to help inspire some kids, but in return they have inspired me ten-fold. I will keep you up to date as to the winner. Have a great day.
