"I'm writing my congressman"
Would you rather someone waste your time or your money? Obviously you are going to ask how much time and how much money. Let's assume that you bill your time at $125 per hour. Would you rather waste $125 or one hour? I believe that this question is viewed differently once you reach the age of 30. When you are young, you could care less when someone wastes your time. You have plenty of time to give. And when you are under 30 you don't want people to waste your money, because you don't have a lot of that. The strange thing here is that when you are even older (such as your 60s and 70s) you are more likely to value money over time. You know what I mean if you have ever spent a great hour or two with your grandparents. They give you all the time world. It is fantastic.
If you happen to agree with my last few thoughts, then help me understand what occurred the other day at the Post Office. A friend of mine was in line waiting to mail some mail. [You gotta love it when you can use the same word as a noun and a verb]. Anyway...the U.S. Postal Service thought it would be a good idea to value their money over their customers' time. They had one, yes one, person working the counter at the lunch time rush. [Sidenote: Companies usually value money over time]. People were getting quite angry. Their time was being devalued, and their employers' money was being wasted. It is a moment like this that you are looking for anything to make the situation better. Just then, out of no where, an elderly women pipes up, "I'm writing my congressman. This is ridiculous. I'm writing my congressman. He will get an ear-full." Perfect. That is exactly what made that trip to the post office worth it. I love when people fire letters off to their congressmen.
For fun, let's examine a congressman's priorities: war in Iraq, war in Afghanistan, national health care, D.C. madam not releasing your name to the media, old lady at post office waiting in line, terrorism, global warming, Britney Spears. So what do congressmen value? Time or money?
My point? I don't have one. This just makes me laugh. I love when people write letters to their congressmen about mundane issues. I like it even better when they use it as a threat. It makes me smile. After all, I value smiles over time and money.

Excellent blog. However, I challenge you to write your congress representative and ask them to find a balance. Someone out there has to WANT to deal with the mundane, this is our life situations, yes? If not, maybe you should run for congress?
